Archive Relocation Project Update

Archive relocation project, update March 2025

At the present time the NSRC archives are stored on the 1st floor of Cheddleton Station building, the former bedrooms of the Station Master. This location is now full, and access is servery limited, to a point where members of the public cannot be granted access for research.

The archive relocation project is planned to provide a dedicated building located on platform 2 at Cheddleton where the archive can be stored and made available for research. Also included within the scope of the project is a public access space for use by local and educational groups. In addition, on the lower floor, a toilet complex including facilities for the disabled will be provided.

The project commenced in early 2023.

A Planning application was submitted for the building to house the NSRC archive on the 13th of July 2023, reference SM D/2023/0346. After a long period of discussions, adjustments and modifications to the proposal formal planning permission was granted on the 20th of January 2025. The granting of planning permission completes the 1st phase of the project and enables the start of the next phase.

Phase 2 comprises of the development of detailed specifications and drawings to enable the tendering process for the building which will deliver quotations for the work. With quotations available the process of applying for grant monies can commence. This phase of the project will be completed with the granting of funds to construct the building, and this is currently planned to finish by the end of 2025.

The 3rd and final phase of the project is the construction of the building and the subsequent relocation of the archive. This phase is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
